The Better Business Bureau has identified veterans as easy targets for scammers.
According to the BBB Scam Tracker, 8.5 percent of reports come from people identifying themselves as veterans, active military members, or their spouses. People in this group who claim to be scam victims report losing a median of $500.
Vets and their families are said to be more susceptible to scams than other victims.
The types of scams fall under a wide range of categories including: identity theft, pay days loans, charity scams, pension and life insurance.
The BBB warns vets and their families to never give out their personal information over the phone or email and to be wary of any solicitation requiring an immediate money transfer.
